You shouldn’t take your eyes for granted. One of the most important things you can do to help maintain your quality of life is protecting your eyesight.

There are many things that you can do to protect your eyesight and keep your eyes healthy in order to reduce your chances of eye disease and common vision problems in the future. Protect your eyes from eye diseases and common vision problems to lead to a better quality of life and in order to perform better in all aspects of your life too.

Here are 5 ways to protect your eyesight:

1. Regular eye exams

It’s important to have annual eye exams. Eye examinations are an important part of your health maintenance. You might have symptoms of eye disease or common vision problems that you’re ignoring. Your optometrist will be able to examine the health of your eyes to ensure that your eyes are healthy and your vision is sharp.

2. Look for warning signs of changes in your vision

If you start noticing signs of changes in your vision, you should book an eye exam with your optometrist right away. Some signs to look for are blurry vision and trouble focusing, difficulty seeing at night, persistent vision disruptions, frequent headaches or migraines, eye infections or discharge, and squinting.

3. Exercise more frequently

Exercise is important throughout life so you should try to walk for at least 30 minutes per day. You should also exercise more frequently because studies suggest that regular exercise such as walk can reduce your risk of age-related macular degeneration by approximately 70 percent.

4. Protect your eyes from UV light

When you’re outdoors, especially in the summer, you should protect your eyes from UV light. It’s important to wear sunglasses with UV protection because extended exposure to the sun can lead to eyelid cancers and macular degeneration. So don’t forget to grab your sunglasses when you step out of your house every time.

5. Eat a healthy diet

Did you know that vitamin deficiency can impair your retinal function? You should be eating a healthy diet because it will help to protect your eye sight. Eating foods such as carrots, mango, kale, spinach, broccoli, nuts, fish, and whole grains will help boost your eye health.
