Many of us experience that gritty and uncomfortable feeling when our eyes become too dry. But, did you know dry eye is more than a temporary annoyance for some people? There are some people that experience an on going problem called ocular surface disease that demands constant management.

Dry eye syndrome is also known as dry eye disease. It is a common condition that occurs when your tear glands don’t produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to your eyes drying out and become red, swollen, and irritated. Dry eye syndrome not only affects your vision, but also affects your quality of life too.

What Causes Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome is caused by a lack of adequate tears. Your tears are a mixture of water, mucus, and fatty oils, which make the surface of your eye smooth and clear. Your eyes need an adequate and consistent layer of tears to keep your eyes healthy, comfortable, and seeing well. Your tears bathe the eye’s surface to keep it moist and wash away dust, debris, and microorganisms. For some, the cause of dry eyes is caused by a decrease in tear production. For others, the cause of dry eyes is caused by an increase in tear evaporation and an imbalance in the makeup of tears.
